Pasture Page

I have had many questions about the proper care of boer goats and particularly about pasture.  Pasture can be an economical and "goat friendly" way of providing both nutrition and good habitat.  Goats prefer different pasture than grazing animals.  As browsers, goats can thrive on plant material that sheep and cattle would ignore.  This can mean a lower maintenance and less expensive type of forage.  I'll let the pictures below explain the rest.  Just look at all the different types of plants that make up my main pasture.  The first pictures are in the springtime followed by autumn.  The last two pics are of a sorghum/sudan cross that I sow and pasture.  I use it by rotating from plot to plot as it is eaten down.  As a side note, remember that with pasture come parasites.  These must be controlled to maintain a thriving herd.  You can find any number of good articles on controlling parasites by simple Googling "goat parasites".  I thought you might find it interesting to see the types of pasture I use.

If you want to talk about pasture, parasites, or other goat husbandry subjects, shoot me an email or give me a call.
